10.3 “The use of Radio for Culture for peace, Disaster Preparedness, Environmental Awareness and Development in Sri Lanka”

The objective is to foster the use of radio programmes to alleviate the present needs of the Sri Lankan population, especially the youngest, in terms of psycho-social relief, disaster preparedness and Culture for Peace and Tolerance, for broadcasting and narrowcasting at IDP transitional shelters, schools, family units, groups and development NGOs.

Specific objectives are to foster national, regional and local educational radio productions for broad and narrowcasting, targeting, especially children, in relation to psycho-social relief and disaster preparedness and, in a second stage, Culture for Peace. Specific attention will also be given fostering community radio stations strategically located in tsunami affected areas, promoting participatory programs geared to the transitional settlements.

These community radios will also play a pivotal role in the promotion of peace and harmony island-wide and specifically in the North Eastern region of the Country.
